The percentage of Real Estate sales the last 20 years without the expertise of a Real Estate Agent has declined.  Some interesting numbers to look over here: 

1991 Total Real Estate Sales %'s:
FSBO - 19% of all sales
Realtor® Assisted - 77% of all sales


2010 Total Real Estate Sales %'s:
FSBO - 9.8% of all sales
Realtor® Assisted - 88% of all sales

This marks a 14% increase in the number of sales Realtors have been involved in since 1991. 

Also, since 2003, the % of buyers of FSBO's who knew the owner prior to the transaction has increased from 36% to 50%.  That suggests FSBO's are increasingly hesitant to go it alone unless they have their buyer lined up before they take the plunge.
